Benjamin Franklin:

Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston in 1706. As a political writer and activist, he, more than anyone, was responsible for  developing the idea of an independent American nation. Regarded as the "First American," Franklin became a national hero when he spearheaded the effort for Parliament to repel the unpopular Stamp Act in 1765. In addition, his keen diplomacy during the revolution secured the much needed support of the French government. Among many other contributions to America's independence, Franklin is the only political figure to place his signature on all three major "founding" documents:  The Declaration of Independence, The United States Constitution, and the Treaty of Paris.
