Freedom Trail Stop 4: King's Chapel

Updated: Aug 23, 2022

As we continue our walk along our Freedom Trail, we come to King's Chapel. It's been standing here since 1686 - The first Non-Puritan church in Boston. However, it didn't stand quite the same as the grand stone building that we see today. Up until 1754, it was a small, wooden chapel. The reconstruction allowed for a larger congregation until the American Revolution caused many members to flee to safer places. Though there were periods when the congregation was smaller in size, it continued to change and reshape as history evolved. The church has always had very diverse members coming from all backgrounds, from the poor to the wealthy and influential. Today there are still church services, as well as a performance space and concert hall.
